London. Places of Interest.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is also in the West End of London. It is the masterpiece of the well-known English architect Christopher Wren. It took him thirty-five years to build the Cathedral.
The Whispering Gallery which is over 100 feet above the floor of the Cathedral is remarkable for its acoustics. A person standing at the entrance of the Gallery can hear early what is said on the opposite side, 107 feet away. In the Cathedral there is the tomb of Lord Nelson killed at the battle of Trafalgar. Sir Christopher Wren, the great architect of St. Paul’s Cathedral, was also buried in the building which he created.
At the beginning of the 19th century England defeated the French and Spaniards in a great sea battle at Trafalgar. It was a triumphant victory of the British nation over Napoleon. Admiral Nelson was killed in this battle. Trafalgar Square was made to commemorate the victory of Nelson at Trafalgar and column with the statue of Nelson on the top of it was erected. Like Hyde Park. Trafalgar Square is often mentioned in press, as a place where mass meetings and demonstrations are held.
The Tower of London, an ancient fortress and once a royal residence, was also a prison where many famous men and women, including kings and queens, were held and executed. It is now a museum.
The interesting old ceremony of the Kings Keys takes place every night at 10 p.m. The Chief Warder attended by an escort licks the gates and gives the keys to the Governor.
Westminster Abbey is famous for its architecture and historical associations. The twin towers were designed by a well-known English architect Sir Christopher Wren. In Westminster Abbey English kings and queens are crowned and many famous men were buried there. In Poets Corner one can see memorials to world’s famous poets and writers: Charles Dickens, Kipling, Shakespeare, Burns, Byron, Scott and others.
The Houses of Parliament built in the Gothic style and standing on the left bank of the river Thames, are not very old buildings. Built in the 19th century (begun in 1840 and finished in 1867), this new building stands in the same place as the Old Palace of Westminster (the old Houses of Parliament), destroyed by fire in 1834. One part of the original building – Westminster Hall – is still there today, at the far end of the new building.
The Houses of Parliament, or the Palace of Westminster, built by the well-known English architect Sir Charles Barry, is the place where the English Government sits.
Big Ben is the name given to the clock and the bell of the clock tower of the Houses of Parliament. The clock has four faces; each of the four faces is over 7 meters in diameter and the minute-hard travels more than half a meter every minute. The great bell weighs 13 and a half tons.
Buckingham Palace is known all over the world as the home of Britain's Kings ans Queens. Everybody who comes to London hurries to see the ceremony of Changing the Guard in front of the Palace of the Queen.
The British Museum is really a history museum.
It is one of the most famous museums in the world. Officially described as the National Library and Museum of History and Archeology, it contains the most important collections in Britain.
Many famous people worked in the Reading Room of the British Museum. Among them well-known writers and scientists.
Piccadilly Circus with its famous central fountain on the top of which stands a statue of Eros, the Greek god of love, is the heart of the West End. About half million people pass through Piccadilly Circus daily.
